Looking confident on camera is not always about you, it’s about what you have to say and how you go about communicating that. It’s normal to worry about different aspects of your facial expression or insecurities you may have, but there are a few tricks you can adopt and follow in order to come across as a confident business person. Instead of looking anxious, worried or on-edge, you can look ready to take on your industry.

When it comes to Vancouver headshot photography, it’s completely normal to feel like a deer in the headlights at first, before you warm up. With a few simple tricks, we can make sure you’re on your way to feeling confident.

Messing Up is Okay

Even if it takes you a few tries to nail a pose or a look, it’s okay. Authenticity is sincere, valued and relatable. Accept that it’s okay to make mistakes and re-centre yourself to nail those next few shots.

Positive Affirmations

Your thoughts, believe it or not, do translate to the camera and end up in your image. If this is your first time ever being in front of the lens, or you just arrived on on-set and you’re anxious, take some time to chat to your photographer so you can relax and laugh a little. We’re experienced and will know how to get you to calm down so you can feel a little more at ease. It’s important to embody the emotions you’re trying to project while your photo is being taken, because the eyes speak.

We can take a few minutes to do a few mock shots where you’re being goofy until you can relax. After that, it’ll be much easier to be naturally confident.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Practice makes perfect. It’s true. Put your phone or camera on a tripod, set up some simple lighting and put your self-timer on. Take some photos of yourself while you practice different angles, different outfits, colour palettes and hairstyles. This will really help you pinpoint the style that looks best on you as well as which angle is ideal. In addition, it’ll help you feel what it’s like having lights pointing at you, while you try to focus on your poses.

If you’re interested in Vancouver headshot photography, get in touch with us. We would love to inform you of our rates, our process and walk you through our portfolio!

Your facial expressions are your main method of communicating your innermost, most authentic self and all Vancouver professional photographers use this to get the most genuine expressions. We use our facial expressions to get information across and present ourselves to the world. While photography doesn’t contain auditory methods of communicating, your facial expression is all you’ve got.

Even though we may not realize it, we are constantly making micro expressions that are not easily caught by an untrained eye. These micro expressions communicate what we are thinking at any given moment, even if what we present to the world is completely different on the surface. It’s important to know how different areas of the face work individually and together, to create a confident expression.

The Eyes

As we all know, the eyes are the windows to the soul. They are the most critical piece to the puzzle when it comes to fully capture what you want to get across.

Gaze into the lens, as far as your eye can see and pretend like you’re looking through it and onto the other side. This helps create an intense gaze that pierces through the camera. If you’re having difficulty, try very slightly squinting with your lower lids. You’ll automatically look more confident, more sure of yourself and ready to take on your industry.

The Eyebrows

Your eyebrows are vast communicators of how you’re feeling at any given moment. Feel angry and your eyebrows will naturally frown in the middle. Feel worried and your eyebrows might unconsciously create an S shape.

A trick used in muscle relaxation during meditation, is to tense up your facial and bodily muscles, and relax them to make sure you’re not unknowingly tense in certain areas. Frown with your eyebrows, and relax them. Smile and open your mouth wide, then purse your lips, and relax.

The Mouth

When you’re nervous, you might unconsciously purse your lips, or they may end up looking tense before having your photo taken. Be mindful of your lips during your photoshoot and relax them if you’re going for a serious look. If you’re going for a fun, friendly and approachable look, one of the Vancouver professional photographers on set will help you relax and laugh so we can get a natural, sincere and truly genuine expression.

The Chin & Neck

Chin and neck tilt is huge when it comes to determining whether you look confident, questioning, endearing or just…not right. You’ll often notice that in photoshoots the photographer will direct the subject by telling them to tilt their chin up, down or in either direction. They may also tell them to tilt their neck a certain way. Although you might not be able to feel the look you’re giving off, your photographer will be your best friend in the process.

Looking for experienced, friendly and knowledgable Vancouver headshot photographers? Get in touch with us to learn more, browse through our portfolio and book a session.

Professional headshots are more important now than ever, being a critical investment in the success of your image as a business professional and as a company. Whether you are a freelancer, have your own business or are running a large corporation, headshots photography gives you a competitive edge over other establishments in your industry. You are marketing yourself, what you are capable of and how you can help your clients achieve their goals.

Why are images so important? They tell a story. They tell our story and they tell it exactly as we want to present it to the world. A good quality, well-shot image communicates relatability, it evokes trust and establishes your brand and the first impression you make.

Personal Grooming

As fun as it is to experiment with hair colour, cut and style, right before a photoshoot, is most definitely not the right time to do it. If you need a freshening up, schedule it anywhere between 3-4 weeks in advance. This will give you plenty of buffer time just in case you don’t like your new style, or if it needs to grow out a little.

Outfits

As a starting point, think about the career you’re representing, or the career you want and start by planning your outfits accordingly around that. This will help you get a better idea of style and colour palette. Usually, solid colours work better than patterns on camera, but it also depends on your background and the overall look you’re going for.

In addition, start by planning your outfits far out in advance. Make sure there are no stains, poor-fitting articles of clothing or rips in the outfits you choose. Doing this significantly sooner ensures you have time to get anything you plan to use, fixed.

A Professional Team

Most important of all, it’s critical that you do your research before picking a photography team. At ShotSpot, we are well-versed in shooting headshots photography of all scales and styles for both individual professionals and company team settings. You can feel free to ask us about our process, browse our online portfolio and get our advice on any part of the photoshoot from hair and makeup, to outfits and location.

Guided Posing

If it’s your first time in front of the camera or you don’t feel comfortable posing, we will guide you through the process so you look natural, comfortable and at ease in your photographs. If you’re still anxious, try practicing in front of the camera with your phone or a regular camera to find your best angles. It’s important that your authentic self is reflected in your headshots for images that genuinely communicate your natural demeanour and professional presence. Relax and be yourself.

Get in touch with us to learn more about our headshots photography services and how you can get started in elevating your professional image.

The benefits to professional food photography Vancouver most certainly shouldn’t be overlooked by businesses in the food industry. Whether you’re a local, community-loved diner or a Michelin-starred restaurant, quality images capture the essence of your food and communicate your message.

It’s Important Across a Variety of Projects

Professional food photography Vancouver displays your dishes to your customers in the most appetizing and beautiful way. Whether you’re looking to attract customers to eat at your restaurant or buy your book, food photography done right makes an impact.

The belief that “you eat with your eyes” rings true, especially when it comes to the visual appeal of food. While some establishments believe it’s best for their brand to have a menu without photos, others find it wildly beneficial. On the other hand, food bloggers might benefit from professional food photography Vancouver until they get the hang of doing it themselves.

From print media like menus and flyers to online media like magazines, social media and blogs, our services are beneficial for a wide variety of businesses and projects.

Professional Food Photography Vancouver Boosts Engagement & Profits

Pro food photos entice your customers, boosting sales and increasing profits. They also put you a step ahead of your competition, displaying your delectable, mouth-watering meals. Choosing to photograph the most high-margin meals on your menu or for your book will further boost these effects.

Updating your menus, promotional content and advertising with professional food photography can also help you attract new customers and get more people through your door. Whether for your website, packaging or promo flyers, the team at ShotSpot can help.

It’s Helpful For Tourists

It can be incredibly difficult to order food without translations or pictures. When it comes to food establishments in the centre of a capital city where tourism is high, having visual and translated versions of your menu is fundamental to satisfied customers.

Are you thinking about updating your food images or starting from scratch? Our professional food photography Vancouver services are aimed at helping you win over your audience. Get in touch with us to learn more or get started!

When trying to boost sales, increase client base and establish a professional, refined image, businesses should be using professional product photography to their benefit. It’s vital to have images that are able to communicate what your products or services offer, without the need for reading lengthy descriptions.

It’s less about written content and more about images, making it fundamental to your success that you put your best foot forward and take advantage of Shotspot’s advertising and professional product photography.

Let’s take a look at why professional advertising and product photography is so valuable.

It Establishes Your Brand Identity

Your brand identity is 90% visual. Apart from typefaces, logos and other designer-created aspects, images play one of the biggest roles in the establishment of your identity as a brand. Photography is a long-term approach to getting your brand recognized within your niche market and worldwide.

It communicates:

A professional approach and company

High-quality products and services

Care and attention to detail

A diverse approach

It Prepares Your Customers For Purchase

Your images should communicate how your products or services will solve the problems your consumers face. They should say “this is how your life will change after using our product” or “this is how much better your life will be with our service.”

You Share Your Message Without a Single Word

A picture really is worth a thousand words. With beautiful, captivating and communicative photos, you’ll need less written content. Your images can show the different colours, sizes, uses and close-up details of your products.

Maximum ROI – Increase Sales & Decrease Returns or Exchanges

When it comes to e-commerce, it can be difficult to convince your consumers to purchase your products without them being able to feel the product in their hands. Professional product photography communicates trust, with close up images showcasing the features and quality of your product. This will create a realistic impression of your products for fewer returns and higher profits.

A Step Ahead of the Competition

It’s a sure thing that your competition is constantly working on upping their game, making it even more important that you do the same. Communicate to your audience that your products are better than competing companies with the quality of your products and image.

Need help getting started? Our professional product photography and advertising photography is aimed at helping you build and grow your brand’s reputation. Get in touch with us to get started!

It can feel overwhelming to figure out how to pose for a headshot. Working with a professional in headshot photography Maple Ridge can greatly increase your chances of having fantastic headshots that land you the job of your dreams. With extensive knowledge, technical skill, and experience, your ShotSpot photographer will guide you in posing, from A to Z.

Use Your Acting Skills

Get into character and communicate through your facial expressions! A good tip is to pretend the camera is a person, to be able to communicate with your eyes. Pretend like the camera is a friend or a love interest depending on the

Breathe & Relax

Breathe and relax as much as you can prior to your photoshoot. Stretch your entire body – your arms, shoulders, legs, neck, hands. Stiffness shows up on camera so make sure your body feels light and flexible.

Be Aware of Your Hands

If you’re not aware of your hand placement, it’s easy for your hands to look awkwardly shaped or positioned in photos. Try to not keep them tense, in fists, fully in your pockets or crossed. Even if this is out of frame, it translates to the entire shot.

Get Moving

Your photographer will help you get moving to help you feel less stiff and relax your body. From dancing, to laughing, to holding a funny object out of frame, nothing gets a good image like comfort. You can also try walking towards the camera at a steady pace, so you don’t feel like you need to pose as much.

Use Your Surroundings

Using what’s around you will help you feel less awkward. You can lean on a wall, or sit on a bench to help give your body something to do rather than stand-alone. It’s important to keep a balance, so keep your weight more on the back foot rather than the front, and don’t lean too much or rely too much on what it is you’re standing beside.

If you’re interested in learning a little more about how we work, get in touch with us to book your first headshot photography Maple Ridge session.

Kids are great fun to photograph – they’re playful, carefree, and usually pretty comfortable in front of a camera. Our kids photography Vancouver service is aimed at making sure your children are at-ease so their natural selves can shine through.

Most times, however, they need some time to relax and warm up before being truly themselves. Other times, it’ll be rather difficult as some children are shy and simply refuse to be photographed.

Let’s take a look at some things we do to get beautiful, fun photos with your kids!

Communicating for Engagement

Talking with children can go a long way in getting them to engage back, smile, and be themselves! We ask them about their favorite subjects at school, their friends, and the different activities they love to do! We also love to joke around and be silly to get them laughing for candid, genuine smiles.

Having Them Sit

Having them sit down is a simple, but effective pose that rarely fails. We sometimes get them to sit crisscrossed on the ground, or sitting on something from the natural environment of the location of the photo shoot is outdoors. They can sit on a rock, log, or a playground, and we’re sure they’ll have fun climbing!

Let Them Lead the Way

we let them pose, unposed. We love letting children lead the photoshoot by having them be themselves, in their element. Maybe they love collecting sticks, picking flowers, or chasing butterflies. We ask them about their favorite activities and see how the photoshoot can progress from there, hopefully getting some fun shots along the way.

Fun Posing – Jumping, On their Tummy, Over the Shoulder

A really fun pose is getting the kids to jump! This doesn’t feel posey and feels completely natural for them. They can jump from a rock or a log on the beach, and even from their bed or couch if the photoshoot is indoors.

Another great go-to is having them lie on their tummy, holding their face. This also works great if we are photographing more than one child and works equally as great for toddlers as it does for older children.

Having the child face away from the camera, but tilting their face towards it is a great pose. Kids that are more comfortable in front of the camera can play with how their chin is angled for different expressions!

Shotspot: Kids Photography Vancouver

These are some easygoing, cute kid poses that are sure to get your toddler or tween active and engaged with the camera! We love capturing the most important moments of your children’s’ lives. To book a kids photography Vancouver session and learn about how we work, get in touch with us. We can’t wait to meet your entire family!

If you’ve been in front of the camera before, you might find it easy to pose for headshots but even then, it’s natural to get nervous. If it’s your first time being in front of the camera, you might not be as self-aware of your face, body, and best angles when posing for your headshots. With headshots photography Vancouver, we’ll guide you in getting the perfect shot for your business, website, or portfolio.

This is especially important if your headshots are for your acting portfolio, as that is the first impression casting directors get regarding whether or not you’re right for the job.

Practice Your Facial Expressions

Rehearse some facial expressions in front of the mirror, maybe take a video of yourself to see what looks the most natural. Try a full smile, a half-smile, a serious expression, and others. This will let you feel ready once you’re on set, to try a variety of facial expressions comfortably.

Speak With Your Eyes

Learn to communicate with your eyes – use your acting skills! Your eyes are the windows to your soul and you can use them to communicate a message and show your personality.

Be Mindful of Your Posture

Bad posture will show up looking awkward in photos. Remember to pull your shoulders back and straighten your back. You’ll look confident in yourself, and the job or role you’re after!

Angle Your Body (not straight on)

It’s usually best to angle your body instead of facing the camera straight on – your photographer will also tell you this onset.

Lower Your Chin

When the camera is at eye level, it can sometimes make it look like you have a double chin even if you don’t. Try lowering your head and moving your head forward slightly. Although this feels awkward, it looks great in photos.

Relax Your Body

Relax your body, your arms, and your hands. You want everything to fall naturally, no matter what pose it is that you’re doing.

You can also check out some of these tips.

Although it can be difficult to find feel comfortable in front of the camera and find a pose that works for you, it’s worth your while to practice and listen to your photographer. Curious to see how we work? Book in a session with us! We would love to help you update your headshots with headshots photography Vancouver, and help you land that dream role.

Family portraits with an experienced photographer are a fantastic way to preserve your favorite moments with your family. Whether someone is going off to college or you want to capture some special moments with the children while they’re still small, it’s never too late to book in a session for family portraits Vancouver.

Styling Advice

It can be hard to coordinate with the whole family and know what’s appropriate to wear for the family photoshoot. We can give you styling advice so you show up looking confident in your own skin, and be sure in the fact that your clothes and colors will look great in photos in correlation to the background and lighting.

For example, it’s a good idea to choose a general color palette beforehand.

Focus on coordinating, not matching with the entire family’s outfits.

We will help you use the color wheel to coordinate what colors and textures will look best in our chosen location. This will help give the photos plenty of vibrancy and contrast.

Use muted colors instead of bright, vibrant colors and patterns.

If your photoshoot is at home, pull color inspiration from your decor.

At the end of the day, your favorite outfit is usually the best way to go. You’ll feel comfortable and confident.

Letting Kids, Be Kids

We let kids be kids. When kids are prepared for the idea of a photoshoot knowing it’ll be a fun event where the whole family gets to take pictures, it gets them excited. If they are told they have to be good and smile, chances are they’ll get restless and irritated. Family photography Vancouver is all about allowing kids to be themselves because that’s when the best photos happen.

We Help You Relax

Getting a good photo is all about feeling relaxed in front of the camera. As photographers, we’re sometimes comedians – helping get kids and adults alike, laughing. It’s important to get the right expressions.

Are you looking for a professional family portraits Vancouver? Get in touch with us to learn more about how we work, and book your first session!
