Your headshot is a powerful marketing tool that is often the first thing a client or a prospective client sees. It is important to put the extra time into preparing for your photoshoot as it will no doubt pay off. Once you or your company have decided on the look or feel of your headshot then it’s time to prepare for the shoot.
Here are some tips we have put together on how to prepare:
Clothing
Dress as if you were going to a job interview or present yourself in the same professional manner as you would when seeing clients is the general rule. However, if you’re the casual type and you don’t usually dress formally then go casual, you want to look like yourself and the profession you work in! Keep it simple and don’t dress in clothes that have crazy patterns or fabrics. Simple clothes that don’t need a lot of readjusting always photograph better. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in and love for your photoshoot and let that shine through your photos.
Accessories
We advise keeping accessories to a minimum, that includes jewelry, hats, scarves, etc. Our experience has shown that less is more and these often do not photograph that well. Accessories can often be distracting so simple and subtle is more effective.
Makeup
The light from the flashes can make you look paler than usual. It’s often better to wear more makeup than usual. If you don’t wear much makeup, it might be best to wear a little for the photoshoot so you don’t look washed out. Put on a bit more makeup than you would in your daily life and your photos will end up looking like the usual you! The same goes for men too, a little foundation or powder will help to smooth out the skin tone.
Hair
If you color your hair then you should have your roots touched up before your photo is taken. It is also a good idea to get that haircut that you keep putting off done before the photoshoot too. Make sure your hair is neatly styled whether it is up or down for your photos.
